In ancient times, before the region of Provence converted to Christianity, they were colonized by the Romans, who had adorned themselves with Torc necklaces to distinguish themselves in terms of social hierarchy, and a way to honor their religion.
Following the conversion, the Torc necklace fell out of favor, and morphed into the Couas, which traditionally is a bracelet and features either a Maltese Cross or a medallion with engraved motifs (or any incised motif).
However, I aimed to combine the two, to honor the Torc necklace while keeping the other traditional qualities of the Coulas. Furthermore, this piece of jewelry is only found in Provence, Specifically Arles.
