This piece draws conceptual and formal inspiration from Roman mosaics, reinterpreting their visual logic through the medium of jewelry. Mosaics, when observed from a distance, often appear as seamless narratives or patterns; however, upon closer inspection, they reveal themselves as intricate, fragmentary systems—composed of individual tesserae that, together, never fully reconcile into wholeness.
In this ring, the fragmented tension of mosaics is embodied through its form, deliberately refusing symmetry and literal representation. The use of sterling silver evokes both the archaeological permanence of ancient artifacts and the luminous surfaces of materials used in Roman mosaic art. The textures and bulges within the design act as tactile glyphs, alluding to patterns and stories without committing to a fully formed or complete design.
The artist's personal visual vocabulary is woven throughout, with influences from their own style of mark-making and imaginative motifs. The result is a wearable microcosm—an homage to mosaic art that captures its essence: depth constructed from detail, meaning hidden within fracture, and a sense of engagement that invites the wearer to decode its visual language.
